YC & a16z cohorts

Class notes

Live cohorts from the two programs that publish their lineups, a16z Speedrun and Y Combinator, refreshed each cycle from the official program pages.

MethodologyHow this tracker is built and refreshed: coverage, sources, currency, exits rules
Coverage

Every disclosed Pre-Seed, Seed, Pre-A, Series A, and Series B round at an AI-native or AI-enabled startup, announced from Jan 2, 2023 onward. After entry: once a company is in the tracker, its later financings (Series C onward) are recorded as validation evidence: amount, valuation (post- or pre-money as stated), lead, and time since its earlier round. They appear with the company's deals and are never added to deal counts, capital totals or any chart; valuation multiples are computed only between valuations of the same type. Exits of tracked companies are linked the same way.

Each company is classified AI-native (the product is an AI model, agent or AI-native workflow) or AI-enabled (AI is a material part of a product that is not itself AI, or the company builds for AI workloads). AI-enabled rounds are fully tracked for Jan 2023 – May 2025, Aug 2025, Jan – Feb 2026 and from Sep 7, 2026; the other months are still being backfilled and are incomplete for AI-enabled rounds until that finishes. Filter by classification in the deal log.

Geography

Global. Primary coverage of the United States and China, with growing coverage of Europe, India, Israel, and the rest of the world.

Sources

Crunchbase News, TechCrunch, Bloomberg, CNBC, Reuters, Sifted (Europe), 36Kr / KrAsia / Tech in Asia, CB Insights, Dealroom, plus official announcements and investor portfolio pages. Open any deal to see its primary sources.

Refresh

Refreshed weekly. Each cycle sweeps the source list above for new announcements, dedupes against the existing log, and rebuilds aggregates.

Exits

Exits announced from Jan 1, 2024. Scope is AI startups plus venture-backed tech companies exiting at $500M or more (and all listings), each flagged AI-native, AI-enabled or not AI; AI and non-AI companies in the same field share a sector. Kinds of exit: acquisitions; acqui-hires (the company was bought mainly for its team, or the structure is not confirmed); license & hire (the acquirer hired the team, sometimes licensing the technology or taking a minority stake, without buying the company); asset or technology purchases where the company itself was not bought are not exits; and listings (IPOs, direct listings and de-SPACs, once shares trade). Shutdowns, secondaries and tender offers are not exits of the company and are not counted. Talks are kept apart on a watchlist and never counted. Exit value is one figure per exit: the deal price for acquisitions and talent deals, and the market capitalisation at the IPO (offer) price for listings. First-day trading can move prices sharply, especially in China, so first-close or opening values are never used; a listing without a sourced IPO-price valuation has no exit value. IPO proceeds are the cash raised, not the company's value, and are shown alongside, never added in. Figures are a stated amount, the acquirer's or issuer's own "approximately" figure, or a press-reported figure; the last two are marked ~ and ranges count at their low end. Stock-for-stock mergers between companies under common control (xAI → SpaceX) return no capital to investors: they stay in the log, labelled, but are not counted as exits or exit value. The headline also reports the total without the largest exit. Regions, sectors and the over-time charts cover valued exits; exits without a disclosed value are counted and listed in their own section. Listed on the page: exits with a value, every listing, unpriced exits to Big Tech or an AI lab, and unpriced exits of a company that had raised $100M or been valued at $1B before the exit (sourced), and every exit of a company the tracker follows for an earlier round; smaller unpriced exits stay in the dataset and are counted in the log footnote. Headquarters come from a page that states them and are left unknown rather than inferred.

Currency

All amounts are shown in USD. Where a source states its own USD figure, that figure is used; otherwise the local-currency amount is converted at the European Central Bank reference rate for the announcement date. Vague amounts (e.g. "tens of millions of RMB") are left undisclosed rather than estimated. Figures are rounded.

Class Notes

Live cohort lists pulled directly from each program's official site — the full lineup, not a curated subset. Currently covers Y Combinator (Spring 2026, Summer 2026, Fall 2026) and a16z Speedrun (SR006, SR007).

Data revisions

Nov 2, 2026. A check against Crunchbase News's weekly and monthly "biggest funding rounds" lists (January 2024 – October 2026), used only as leads, added 11 Pre-Seed to Series B rounds the tracker had missed (among them Genspark's $275M Series B, Cowboy Space's $275M Series B, Armada's $230M Series B, Upscale AI's $190M Series A and Alembic's $145M Series B) and 44 later rounds (Series C onward) of tracked companies to the validation record. Every field comes from opened company, investor or press pages. Totals for the months of those 11 rounds rose; later rounds never enter totals.

Nov 2, 2026. July through December 2023 were swept with the same archive method and added 708 rounds announced in those months (547 at companies new to the tracker, 161 later rounds at tracked companies; $9.44B disclosed across 602 of them). January 2023 through May 2025 is now swept month by month with one method. Measured recall against the swept feeds is 69–87% per month; most misses are rounds held because no opened page stated their stage or headquarters country, so totals for the second half of 2023 are a floor. Figures for other periods are unchanged.

Nov 1, 2026. May and June 2023 were swept with the same archive method and added 144 rounds announced in those months ($2.22B disclosed across 120 of them). Measured recall against the swept feeds is 80–82% per month; most misses are rounds held because no page stated their stage or headquarters country. At the time, July through December 2023 had not yet been swept; figures for other periods are unchanged.

Nov 1, 2026. Coverage now starts in January 2023. January through April 2023 were swept with the same archive method and added 302 rounds announced in those months ($4.33B disclosed across 251 of them). Measured recall against the swept feeds is 83–95% per month. Rounds whose headquarters, stage, date, amount or AI scope could not be confirmed were left out. At the time, May through December 2023 had not yet been swept; figures for periods from January 2024 onward are unchanged.

Nov 1, 2026. Coverage now starts in January 2024. January 2024 through May 2025 were swept with the archive method: every article the fixed set of publications ran in each month was screened, and rounds were verified from the opened pages. This added 3,100 rounds announced in those 17 months (1,602 AI-native, 1,498 AI-enabled; $47.02B disclosed across 2,585 of them). Measured recall against the swept feeds is 91–98% per month. Rounds whose headquarters, stage, date or source could not be confirmed were left out. The all-time view now begins in January 2024; figures for periods from June 2025 onward are unchanged.

Oct 31, 2026. 32 more rounds announced in January and February 2026 were added after the operator resolved headquarters questions on rounds that had been held (January 2026: 219 → 236 rounds, $149.4M disclosed across 10 of the added rounds; February 2026: 281 → 296 rounds, $181.5M across 6). Totals for periods that include January or February 2026 rose; figures for other months are unchanged.

Oct 30, 2026. January and February 2026 were re-swept with the same archive method. It added 252 rounds announced in those months that had not been recorded (January 2026: 99 → 219 rounds, $1,850.8M disclosed across 93 of the added rounds; February 2026: 149 → 281 rounds, $2,531.2M disclosed across 102). Totals for periods that include January or February 2026 rose; figures for other months are unchanged.

Oct 30, 2026. August 2025 was re-swept with the archive method used for the backfill: every article the fixed set of publications ran that month was screened, and rounds were verified from the opened pages. It added 65 rounds announced in August 2025 that had not been recorded (August 2025: 155 → 220 rounds; $624.4M disclosed across 47 of them). Totals for periods that include August 2025 rose; figures for later months are unchanged.

Oct 19, 2026. A validation pass re-checked Series A and Series B rounds against their sources. It merged rounds that were stored twice, moved later-stage rounds (Series C onward) and rounds that had not completed out of the deal counts, set approximate or cumulative amounts to undisclosed, and moved rounds to the date of their first public report. Disclosed capital fell while round counts rose: China from $12.89B to $9.92B, and Robotics & Physical AI from $17.17B to $15.25B. Figures quoted before that date reflect the earlier data.

Coverage notes

Press-led trackers often miss stealth seeds and quiet co-investments. We counter this with a targeted backfill of 40+ marquee firms across the US and India—including Sequoia, a16z, Peak XV, and Accel. Our latest sweep (Nov 2, 2026) included a global press audit and a Southeast Asia top-up across Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, and Malaysia to ensure full coverage of the window. Note: while we capture Corporate VC (M12, Salesforce, NVentures) via primary press, direct sweeps for these arms are still in development.
